As the name suggests, Table Mountain is a majestic flat-topped mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa. It is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top. The mountain forms part of the Table Mountain National Park.

Table Mountain has been selected as the official nominee to represent South Africa in a global New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign.

The New7Wonders Foundation in Zurich, Switzerland announced yesterday (Wednesday January 7) that Table Mountain is one of the 261 magnificent natural sites from 222 countries that have made it through to the second round in this global race to name the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

Other iconic natural sites to come through the first round include the Grand Canyon, Loch Ness, Mount Fuji, the Amazon, the Great Barrier Reef and Niagara Falls.

The New 7 Wonders of Nature will be determined by votes from the public and you can show your support for the Mother City’s majestic mountain by casting your vote here.

Table Mountain is famous for its extra-ordinary floral biodiversity, mainly fynbos. Table Mountain alone has over 1500 species of plants, roughly the same number as are found throughout the entire British Isles. Table Mountain National Park is the  richest corner of the Cape Floristic Region and richest single floristic area in the world. The main vegetation of the mountain is the unique and rich Cape fynbos, which forms part of the Cape Flora Region protected areas. These protected areas are a World Heritage Site. Amongst these species are many kinds ofproteas.
