iStock still receives the highest traffic

Posted in Photography Internet links by Heinrich Volschenk on December 27, 2008

It is still clear from Alexa traffic ranking that iStockphoto remains the number ONE stock photography site in terms of reach and page views. iStockphoto.com receives on average 2-3 time more traffic compared to the other major microstock sites. The Alexa traffic rankings is calculated from the Alexa Toolbar users and data collected from other, diverse sources over a rolling 3 month period. A site’s ranking is based on a combined measure of reach and pageviews. Reach is determined by the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day. Pageviews are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site.

Favourite photography links…

Posted in Photography Internet links by Heinrich Volschenk on September 4, 2008

Today I share with you some of my favourite photography places to visit on the WWW.

Yanik’s Photo SchoolYaniks:

The main focus of Yanik’s blog is to give a collection of information related to photography, including tutorials, tips & tricks, web site and product reviews and much more! He regularly posts great tutorials, I personally find his Vimeo Photoshop tutorials really informative and of excellent quality. Yanik is professional photographer, his main focus being stock and commercial photography, who also regularly works with a international publishing houses on book projects (Elsevier and Cengage Learning) as well as Massage Therapy Journal, a US-based magazine. Yanik says he has a passion for nature photography and, being a nomad at heart, travel photography. He has  natural aptitude for teaching with over 10 years experience and will soon be doing workshops nationally and internationally. His most recent blog entry covers his Microstock photography workflow from A to Z. This is only part 1, and it includes some basic step-by-step discussions of how/where to start a microstock photo shoot. What a pleasure to read this talented photographer’s  perspective, I always learn so MUCH!

Microstockgroup.com:Microstock

A forum-based meeting place for microstock photographers, which covers all the big and small, old and new microstock sites  where you can sell your photography. I great place to find the inside info about the different modus operandi of the various microstock sites. Especially useful if you are researching your options of becoming an exclusive contributor to a specific microstock site. The forum also presents a to the point knowledge base of what microstock photography is all about, really excellent for the beginner.

Outdoorphoto:Outdoorphoto

A South African based forum/photo sharing resource to get yourself inspired about photography in the outdoors. Member-contributed galleries include: Nature, Avian, Macro and Close-up, Landscape, Sport and Action, People (Natural light), Studio, Visual Impact and Travel Photography. Members can also rate your photographs and gives advice on techniques and gear. There is of course also a online photo gear shop.

Studio Araminta:araminta

A comparative visual summary of the best selling artists on the major microstock sites. You get info on the portfolio size, total downloads and average downloads/day. You can also display your own statistics using this web site.

PhotoNetCast:photocastnet
A podcast produced with the cooperation of several photography bloggers. You can subscribe via iTunes and the idea behind this site is to stand out from the crowd and turn podcast experience into a more relaxed and dynamic feature with a roundtable discussion format. Instead of delivering the common “how to’s” they bring their own opinions and discuss the latest news going around in the world photography of with a special focus on what is released by photography bloggers. This, of course, doesn’t mean that are not educational. Takes perhaps a long time to download, but its a real pleasure to listen to these inspiring guys.

That is then a summary my current favourite places on the Internet. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do. All comments are welcome…
